10 Essential Tips for New Lash Artists Starting Their Own Lash Business

Starting your own lash business is an exciting journey filled with creativity, entrepreneurship, and the chance to make your clients feel more beautiful and confident. That is where I started too. I turned my loft conversion at home into my salon. As a new lash artist, it's important to set a solid foundation for your business to thrive. Here are 10 top tips to guide you as you embark on your lash artistry adventure:

1. Education is Key: Invest in proper training and education to build a strong skill set. Enroll in reputable lash extension courses and workshops that cover both technique and safety protocols even if you are working from home. Continuous learning will set you apart in the competitive world of lash artistry.

2. Quality Products Matter: Don't compromise on the quality of your lash products. Invest in high-grade lashes, adhesives, and tools that not only produce stunning results but also ensure the safety and comfort of your clients. You want to work with products that are easy to work with for you, in your work environment, give good results and one that you can trust and rely on.

3. Perfect Your Craft: Practice, practice, practice! Dedicate time to hone your lash extension techniques. Start on mannequins, friends, and family before taking on paying clients. Consistent practice will boost your confidence and skill level. My golden rule is in order to get more confident and not loose the skills, you need see at least 3 clients a week, BUT if you want to really improve your artistry, then the more the better. If you very new, then I would consider, giving the new paying clients a little discount, loyalty card or a discounted infill if they come back in 2 weeks. This will give you more practice, but also give the new clients incentive to come back to you with more lashes, less complaint of lashes twisting or retention and building good client relationships.

4. Create a Comfortable Workspace: Your workspace should be professional, clean, organised, and comfortable for both you and your clients. A well-designed and inviting environment enhances the overall experience and helps you work more efficiently. Use Pinterest, instagram and other salons for inspiration. The first impression is important, it gives the customer trust that they are in good hands.

5. Build a Strong Online Presence: In today's digital age, a strong online presence is crucial. Create a professional website and utilise social media platforms to showcase your work, share before-and-after photos, and engage with potential clients. You should always consider one or more social media platforms, to advertise and gain new clients but also to connect with other lash artist and learn new trends and tips.

6. Nail Your Branding: Develop a unique brand identity that reflects your style and values. From your logo to your colour scheme, consistency in branding creates a memorable impression and builds trust with clients. Design a nice logo that represents you, add them to your before and after pictures, put it on aftercare cards and loyalty cards. This will give you a branded professional look for your new business.

7. Set Competitive Pricing: Research the market to determine competitive pricing for your services. Factor in your skill level, the quality of your products, and your geographical location. Offering value while covering your costs is essential for long-term success. Definitely research your area, do consider your experience when setting prices, and at start you want to get the customers in! Don't feel you have to cut prices because you have a nice home salon instead of working in a busy salon on the high street. Some clients prefer the quietness and privacy that can be offered in a room or home salon.

8. Provide Exceptional Customer Service: Great customer service sets you apart. Be attentive, responsive, and friendly in your interactions. Listen to your clients' preferences and concerns, and go the extra mile to exceed their expectations. Always let your customers know that they can contact you prior and after their next appointment if they are having questions about the treatment and the lashes.

9. Stay Hygienic and Safe: Maintain the highest standards of hygiene and safety. Professionalism is so important. Follow strict sanitation protocols to prevent infections and allergic reactions. Your clients' health should always be a top priority. What I always do, while customers are getting their money, or their clothes on, I always show customers that I am spraying or disinfecting the tools and the work area after their treatment, ready for the next client. That shows I take hygiene very seriously.

10. Network and Collaborate: Connect with fellow lash artists, salon owners, and beauty professionals in your area. Networking can open doors to collaborations, referrals, and valuable insights that can contribute to your business growth. It can be invaluable for you and your business and it is fun to get to know other lash artists to learn and share new techniques or ideas, to hear their stories, to learn from their mistakes. If you don't have anyone near you, then I would recommend finding them in groups online (Facebook is a good start) and go to events, conferences and competitions.

Starting a lash business is an exciting and fulfilling endeavor. Remember, success takes time, so be patient and persistent. With dedication, a commitment to learning, and a passion for lash artistry, you're well on your way to building a thriving lash business that brings beauty and confidence to your clients.

Good luck on your journey!
